I was drawn by the majesty of the architecture before me, classically set between the arches of the Pont Royal and the trees along the eastern riverbank. Seeing the Louvre rising alone and dominating the entire skyline, with no modern buildings in view, were a most remarkable and quite breathtaking sight, and an enormous credit to the city fathers who have kept it so.
